“Unexpected Encounters” Series (ongoing)
The “Unexpected Encounters” series reflects my interest in horror films, haunted houses, ghost stories, dreams, hallucinations, and Southern Gothic literature. I stage my figurines and resin pieces to form open-ended narratives that leverage the figures' haunting presence. I use my camera as a cropping tool to capture cinematic stills and tense, mysterious compositions, then use the photographs and the original sculptures as the basis for my oil paintings. Colored light is used for dramatic effect and psychological tone so that the characters come alive through their proximity to one another and their environment. The paintings position the viewer as an outside observer or an active participant interacting with the characters in confrontational or soul-piercing stares.
